In the first century, prayer was part of the daily life of every adult Jewish male. Yet the Gospel of Luke records one of Jesus’ disciples—an adult Jewish male—asking Jesus to teach them to pray. Why would they need to be taught prayer? For what exactly is the disciple asking? What does he want?
