I hope to not read a review for a mattress or a washing machine for a long time! Within the past year, we’ve had to purchase both. When I make a purchase for something with a larger price tag or something that will last a while, I read a significant amount of reviews. That being said, I’m pretty happy with both purchases.
When I’m buying smaller products like toothbrush head replacements or water filters for my fridge, I typically check out their ratings, read a couple of reviews, and then make my purchase. I’ll spend a couple of extra dollars for a product with a higher rating on Amazon. Ratings matter. From hotels to TVs to restaurants, ratings and reviews are part of my world as I navigate through life, valuing my time and money and always wanting to use both wisely.
I know I’m not alone in this. Think about this though, if people are reading reviews before buying toothbrush heads, don’t you think they’re reading reviews before bringing their family or friends to a church? Even if they’re coming solo, they’re likely not stepping through the doors of our church without checking out other people’s thoughts and opinions. There’s no return policy on a bad church experience. You can’t simply replace it with a better one later. The bad experience sticks with you and perhaps even hurts a bit.
This past week in worship, we explored the question, “Why Vista Ridge UMC?” If you missed it, you can download the sermon. From the many conversations I’ve had with the members here over the past seven weeks, I’ve discovered there are many reasons to be a part of this faith community. You’ve shared your thoughts with me, but will you now share them with the Internet world?
Posting a review of our church on Google and Facebook will allow others to hear your recommendation. They’ll have an idea of what brought you here and what keeps you here. Your recommendation might be what helps someone decide to come to our church. Our mission at Vista Ridge UMC is building life-giving relationships with God, with each other and with our community. There are other people searching for those life-giving relationships. Their search will often start on Google and Facebook.
The more open and transparent you are with your review, the more likely it is to resonate with someone else in a similar situation. The New Testament is full of examples of people who traveled miles and miles to tell people about Jesus. The church has spread over the past 2,000 years because people have shared the good news of Jesus with others, often traveling to other countries to spread the word. Help us continue to spread the good news. It can start with a simple review.
